Memorial Day Event

Each Memorial Day, the Residents Association partners with the historic Brandywine Baptist Church to honor our fallen veterans. This early morning event includes members of local American Legion Post along with color guards from several local Boy Scout Troops.

After a short benediction and words from a guest speaker, attendees are invited to place flowers on the graves of veterans buried in the Church’s historic cemetery. This cemetery contains the graves of soldiers dating back to the Revolutionary War to the present.

About Brandywine Baptist Church

Brandywine Baptist Church, also known as the Church on the Battlefield, was established in 1692, and stands at the edge of the Brandywine Battlefield Park. In many ways it reflects the history of our nation. During the Battle of Brandywine in the Revolutionary War, it was the site of General George Washington’s encampment one night, and Hessian troops the next.

The church, the oldest continuously operating Baptist church west of Philadelphia. was established in 1692 with members meeting in homes. In 1715 the congregation was formally organized as Brandywine Baptist Church.

In 1777 the Battle of Brandywine was fought in close proximity to the church, with at least two members associated with General Washington’s forces. Generals Washington and Lafayette set up their headquarters in the farmhouses immediately adjacent to the church.

In 1808 the original log structure was replaced by a new stone building to accommodate increased membership. The present stone church building was completed in 1869. In 2022 the fellowship hall was remodeled to encourage community among believers.
