The Chadds Ford Community Association was founded in 1958 as the Civic Association of Birmingham Township. Its mission was to protect two-acre zoning in the township, to conduct an annual cleanup campaign and to publish a newsletter—The Birmingham Times–providing residents with news concerning developments in the township. The township was undergoing significant change as it became less rural and more suburban. The association sponsored Chadds Ford Days until it turned that activity over to the Chadds Ford Historical Society. After 24 years of civic action, interest in the association waned and the last meeting was held circa 1982. Interest was revived in May 1993 when of group of residents explored procedures for reviving and reorganizing the association.
The newly revived organization maintained the civic orientation of the previous organization and saw itself as both a partner and ‘watch dog’ group that monitored and reported on the municipal activities of the Township. Prior to emails, websites and social media, the Association was a vital source of information concerning Township governance, projects, and meetings. This information was distributed via the Associations quarterly newsletter, The Chadds Ford Times.
In 1996, when Birmingham Township became two separate townships—Birmingham Township and Chadds Ford Township, the organization was renamed The Civic Association of Chadds Ford Township. The township renaming effort was spearheaded by Association President, Tony Frances. One of its first initiatives was the reinstatement of twice annual township roadside cleanup efforts which continue to this day. As the township and traffic grew, these cleanups became an important way to maintain the character and beauty of the township. It was also a great way to people to connect over coffee and doughnuts at the Township building.
Over the years, the Association continued its work reporting on Township government and activities and launched several new initiatives including its annual Citizen of the Year Award and annual Scholarship Award. The Citizen of the Year is given to residents that have shown outstanding leadership to support the Township. The annual Scholarship Award is given to outstanding high schools seniors that are residents of Chadds Ford Township. The fall Roadside Clean Up is now held in partnership with Chadds Ford Township’s Recycling Day and includes a food donation drive.
In 2007, the Association became a 501c3 non-profit to ensure proper governance and transparency to its members. Annual meetings were held, usually at the Brandywine River Museum, to provide members with organizational updates and elect new Board members and Officers. A special speaker was always on hand, frequently a local historian providing insights into Township history. By 2015, nearly a third of all Township residents were members of the Civic Association and were voting members of the organization.
By 2018, changes in the Township management created an opportunity for the organization to rethink its mission and purpose. Chadds Ford Township had developed its own website and newsletter which removed the need for the Association to do the same. During 2020 and 2021 the organization put most of its activities on hold because of the Covid pandemic. In 2021, the organization was renamed the Chadds Ford Township Residents Association to demonstrate its shift from a civic to a community focused association. It remains a 501c3 and is managed as a traditional non-profit without voting members.
With that renewed focus, the new Association launched a series of initiatives:
From 2023-2025, the revitalized Association introduced several new events including the Holiday Tree Lighting and the Trunk or Treat.
In 2026, the Association changed its name to the Chadds Ford Community Association to better reflect its focus on community building, its support of both residents and businesses in the Township and its independence from Chadds Ford Township government.
